March 20 EBBC Meeting The March meeting agenda includes discussion of AB1358, The Complete Streets Act and presentations on Bike to Work month from both Nancy Cuneo, BTW Coordinator for Contra Costa County, and Dave Campbell, BTW Coordinator for Alameda County. At 8:30pm our special guest speaker will be Oakland's new Bicycle/Pedestrian Program Manager, Jason Patton, who will discuss the City's new bike plan. Learn more about Oakland's vision for a bicycle-friendly city. Get involved and contribute your ideas. For more info, go to www.oaklandpw.com/bicycling. Safe Passing AB60, the bill sponsored by State Assembly member and Transportation Committee Chair Pedro Nava, is controversial, even among bicyclists. As a participant of the California Bicycle Coalition's legislative committee, EBBC supports working with Nava to improve the bill and increase its likelihood of enactment. The discussion about AB60 in the media, as exemplified by a recent Oakland Tribune editorial on the bill has, once again, underscored the need for increased motorist education about bicyclist's right to the road. To this end, read EBBC Executive Director Robert Raburn's published letter in response to the Tribune editorial. "Bay in a Day 2007" announced The Bay Area Bicycle Coalition (BABC) is sponsoring its 3rd annual Bay in a Day ride, which, this year, have a new format. There will be two loops on successive days, over the weekend of Sept 8 and 9. Cyclists who opt to complete the long versions of both loops will have cycled around the entirety of San Pablo/San Francisco Bays under their own power. Each loop will offer both a century option and a metric (or close to) century. For more info, see the BABC website. MTC-Hosted Climate Change Forums February 16th's inter-agency forum asking for input on solutions to climate change sold out. Bay Area residents are encouraged to attend a second workshop on Friday, February 23. Check MTC's website for more information and to RSVP. Read EBBC Executive Director Robert Raburn's letter detailing simple and effective measures that can help address the challenges posed by climate change now, by prioritizing bicycle transportation, and urging Bay Area agencies to show some leadership. Tuesday Meeting is at the MetroCenter IMPORTANT: This Tuesday's monthly meeting will be held at the MTC MetroCenter, 101 Eighth Street, Room 171, Oakland, near Lake Merritt BART. Martinez Celebrates Cycling - Feb 10 This year's Martinez Celebrates Cycling event is going to build on the success of the 2006 event with an expanded racing schedule and a shift to the downtown next to Alhambra Creek where we enjoyed the fanciful bicycle window displays in many antique shops and businesses. Members of the EBBC enjoyed working with Martinez officials and residents in 2006 as they promoted bicycling events and introduced many visiting cyclists to their gorgeous shoreline trails only blocks from racing and other bicycle events. The historic Martinez downtown will be the backdrop for the 2007 Bay Front Criterium featuring nine action packed races including a kid's race, two women's races and a Pro/1 race to end the day. Register for the 2nd Annual Bay Front Criterium. The Alhambra Valley Tour will take place beginning at 8am. The picturesque tour will be nearly 40 miles. To register for the Alhambra Valley Tour, download an application. During the day, you can visit the Live Healthy Fair featuring health and bike-related vendors. Kid's activities will include a bike race and a bike safety rodeo. Leave your u-locks at home. The EBBC's free valet bike parking lets you watch exiting races or visit nearby cafes and pubs without worry. Community events don't happen without funloving volunteers who pledge a few hours. You can sign-up to be a course marshall by calling (925) 372-3547 or email lpeterson@cityofmartinez.org. Volunteers at the EBBC parking corral, Estudillo at Main, will have a front row seat for all the racing action. Contact Robert Raburn to volunteer. Bay Area Bicycle Coalition is hiring The Bay Area Bicycle Coalition (BABC) is hiring a part-time/temporary Bike to Work Day Assistant Coordinator to work 20 hours per week from the hire date (anticipated to begin in early January) until June 15, 2007.
