Bicycle Safety Quiz
4C)
Congratulations!
Your answer is correct. "Bicyclists are not out of place on
the roadway--they are part of traffic and share the road with other drivers "
according to the California Drivers Handbook. Your predictable behavior in the
road insures that you are seen by motorists and is really the safest place to
be.
According to the CVC Section 21750, "The driver of a vehicle overtaking another
vehicle or a bicycle proceeding in the same direction shall pass to the left at
a safe distance without interfering with the safe operation of the overtaken
vehicle or bicycle."
Also note CVC Section 21202(a) "Any person operating a
bicycle upon a roadway at a speed less than the normal speed of traffic moving
in the same direction at that time shall ride as close as practicable to the
right-hand curb or edge of the roadway ..."
How close is "practicable" is
sometimes debated among bicyclists. Most experienced riders occupy the right
one-third of the lane to avoid being run off the road by motorists who may
otherwise attempt to squeeze by. They also avoid the door zone. Pedal on!
