Bike Loading, AC TransitSafe Routes to Transit Program Overview

EBBC and the Transportation and Land Use Coalition (TALC) were selected to coordinate funds for the regional Safe Routes to Transit (SR2T) program. SR2T is funded as part of the voter-approved Measure 2 that raised tolls on Bay Area bridges to $3. It promises to greatly improve safe bicycle and pedestrian access to transit stations. For more information, please go to www.transcoalition.org/c/bikeped/bikeped_saferoutes.html.

The $20 million budget for SR2T is only a fraction of the amount needed to fully implement bike/ped access improvements and secure bike parking. The initial estimate by TALC and the EBBC totaled $203 million. We next worked to identify a prioritized list of projects that totaled $130 million. The effectiveness of these proposals at replacing car trips over a 30-year horizon was $0.52 and $0.44, respectively, for each new transit rider. Compared to most transit development proposals with costs for each new rider in excess of $10, Safe Routes to Transit represents a bargain that promises to take full advantage of our existing transit infrastructure. Costly automobile parking garages need not apply!

In Japan, Germany and the Netherlands, programs to boost bicycling as a feeder mode to transit have resulted in overflowing bicycle parking facilities at stations in both the central areas and suburbs. In contrast, outlying transit stations in the US are typically surrounded by a moat of automobile parking--anathema in itself to convenient and safe access for bicyclists and pedestrians.

A spreadsheet (excel format, 52k) listing the capital projects was provided to us by the MTC (note that transit operations expenses were allocated, but nothing for bike stations.)
