Amalfi Coast   click to enlarge pictures

Even if you've never visited the Amalfi coast, you've probably seen it in countless movies and photos. The highway hugging the steep coast is an incredibly thrilling ride.

I started from Naples (after taking the train down from Rome) and biked south to Pompeii. The traffic in and around Naples was incredibly intense. Pompeii was remarkably well preserved under the mud and lava (Pompeii's coliseum). Traffic in Pompeii was pretty intense too -- one driver collided with me at low speed.
As I headed south from Pompeii, the coastline became incredibly rugged. This photo gives an idea of how the road hangs precariously on the side of the cliff.
Tiny village crammed into the cliff-side.
View from the road.

I was just a few days behind the Giro
South of the Amalfi coast is the Paestum, an ancient Greek colony.
Just after taking this photo, I proceded down the hill and got doored by this complete idiot. I was OK, but my front wheel was ruined. But as luck would have it, he was able to provide me with new front wheel as he had a rather extensive bike workshop in his backyard.
