Monthly Meeting Programs

EBBC holds 11 monthly meetings/year. No meeting is held in the month of December. EBBC's monthly meeting is held the third Tuesday of the month, usually—but not always—at Oakland's Rockridge Branch Library, 5366 College Ave, at Manila. (Check website or call 433-RIDE prior to meeting to double-check location.) The meeting begins at 7:30pm during even-numbered months (Feb., Apr., Jun., Aug., Oct.) and at 7:00pm during odd-numbered months (Jan., Mar., May, Jul., Sep., Nov.) This is to allow the board some extra time to discuss administrative and action items.

Everyone is welcome at all EBBC meetings. Feel free to come at the beginning, or, if you prefer, just come at 8:30pm for the feature presentation/guest speaker covering topics ranging from local transit issues to South American bike touring excursions. The feature presentation is generally described on the first page of the monthly issue of rideOn. The agenda for meetings is distributed via the EBBC listserv on the Friday prior to the meeting.

Volunteer!

EBBC is a volunteer run grassroots advocacy organization. Our strength and effectiveness depend on volunteers. Currently, we need help:
  • indexing back issues of rideOn,
  • assisting with membership database updates, and
  • helping with our newly forming Bike Shop Outreach Committee.
If you are interested in any of these activities, please email EBBC volunteer, Dave Campbell. Other ways to help include:
  • Communicate with your elected official and advocate for bicyclists. Stay informed about East Bay issues by reading the newsletter, joining the listserv, and/or checking the Campaigns section of the website;
  • Attend one of the bicycle advisory committee meetings in your area;
  • Help park bikes at one of the many valet bike parking corals we set up each year. Have fun helping us for a variety of events such as Oakland Criterium bicycle races in July, the Solano Avenue Stroll in September, and more (check the Events page for a list of events);
  • Write an article for our newsletter, or just take a cool photograph that is bicycle or transportation related, and send it (complete with date, caption or explanation) to our newsletter editor;
  • Got a friend who likes to bicycle? Give them an EBBC brochure and encourage them to become a member;
  • Contact us, or come to a meeting to see how your skills and interests can be matched with EBBC's needs.

Ever wonder about why there's no bike lane on a really obvious street in your neighborhood? You may be surprised to learn that even when a street is listed on a bike plan as a priority candidate for lanes, that is no guarantee of striping, even when funding is available (the bike lanes proposed for Telegraph Ave. in Oakland, for example.) If you feel strongly about the need for a bike lane in your city, a good first step is to contact your Bicycle Advisory Committee (BAC) and find out if the street is on the local plan. Even if you cannot attend BAC meetings, you may be able to contribute by writing letters of support on specific projects, or by rallying your neighbors and local businesses. Don't have a BAC in your city? Form one! Read on for more info.

About Bicycle Advisory Committees, (download current BAC Calendar, .pdf format)

Cities throughout California have a Bicycle Advisory Committee ("BAC") made up of citizens and city staff that formulate policy locally. See EBBC's Model Charter for BACs (Word doc.) BACs are encouraged by MTC Resolution 875 and are required for Bay Area cities to apply for certain types of transportation funding. Anyone is welcome to attend BAC meetings, to listen or to offer suggestions on bike improvements.

It is EBBC's goal to find community liaisons for all 33 cities that EBBC represents. Below is a chart summarizing the current status of local/regional BACs and whether a bike plan exists in that jurisdicition. Below that (and linked to the chart) is contact and meeting info for each BAC. This chart is new as of 8-21-04 and may require updating. If you notice inaccuracies, please email the webmaster. Thanks!
