I made excellent time riding from Prague to the German border. But what were these
hills near the border? They weren't on the map. As I got close to them, a cyclist on a yellow road bike came up
from behind and asked something in Czech, which I didn't understand. So then he asked if
I was Hungarian. Nope, I said, American. Well, this really blew him away as this remote part
of the world doesn't see many visitors, let alone from America. As it turned out, he used to
be a mechanic for the Czech cycling team. He
showed me the local backroads
to avoid heavy traffic into Germany, pointing out all the former Russian military base locations.
I stayed overnight at his place at the top of the hills (near a small ski area) and headed down into
Dresden the next day.
